Silver Diamine Fluoride vs. Fillings: Which is Right for Your Child's Cavity?

Blog

As a parent, nothing is more important than your child's health. When it comes to dental health, making the best decisions can be challenging, especially when your child has a cavity. Today, we will explore two popular treatment options: Silver Diamine Fluoride and traditional fillings.

Understanding Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, is a non-invasive treatment method that helps to halt or slow the progression of tooth decay. It's a liquid substance that's directly applied to the affected area.

Some key benefits of SDF include:

  • Non-invasive and painless
  • Stops or limits decay progression
  • Cost-effective

However, SDF does have its drawbacks. The most notable one is that it can permanently stain the decayed areas of the tooth black. This discoloration is actually an indication that the treatment is working and the tooth is remineralizing.

Traditional Fillings: The Tried and True Method

Traditional fillings have been used for decades to treat cavities. The decayed part of the tooth is carefully removed, and the area is filled with a biocompatible material like composite resin or glass ionomer. Here at Toothlings Pediatric Dentistry, we only use white tooth-colored filling material.

Here are some benefits of fillings:

  • Effective and durable
  • Esthetic and match the tooth color

On the downside, fillings may be more invasive than SDF. Young or apprehensive children may find it more challenging to tolerate all of the steps required to complete a filling. Furthermore, very young children may not be ready developmentally to sit through this type of appointment, or may require additional sedation.

Which is Right for Your Child?

Deciding between SDF and traditional fillings largely depends on the extent of the decay, your child's comfort level, and the recommendation of your pediatric dentist. SDF might be a suitable option for very young children who aren’t quite ready for fillings, or those who are extremely anxious about dental procedures. Additionally, small early cavities can be treated with SDF to prevent further progression as an alternative to simply monitoring the area.

On the other hand, if the cavity is too large or in a noticeable area, a traditional filling may be a better choice due to its aesthetic advantages. It's crucial to have a thorough discussion with your pediatric dentist to determine the best course of action.

Preventing Future Cavities

No matter the treatment option you choose, prevention is always the best medicine. SDF treatment is most effective when paired with healthy habits.

Fortunately there are some key habits that you can practice to help keep your child’s smile bright and cavity-free:

  • Ensure your child brushes twice a day and flosses once a day. Young children should have parental assistance with their oral hygiene.
  • Limit sugary drinks and frequent snacking habits, especially with sticky and starchy foods
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups.
